Dear colleagues, teachers of English as a foreign language,

I have taken on the responsibilities of a school advisor recently and I feel like addressing all of you with friendly regards to confirm my will to have a sincere relationship and productive cooperation with you, which can offer solid ground for interaction, the key factor to our professional development.
It is true that changes in education and in society place new demands on our profession. We are increasingly called upon to help students become autonomous learners by acquiring skills, rather than memorizing information.
We are asked to deal with heterogeneous classrooms, as they now contain a more heterogeneous mix of children or young people from different backgrounds and with different levels of aptitude. We are required to use the opportunity offered by new technology and to respond to the demand for individualized learning.
In addition, the cross-curricular approach to learning requires that we should work collaboratively in partnership with our colleagues of other subjects. Above all we are asked to help students acquire a second language using communicative approaches.
These changes want us to be equipped with skills and competences for the new roles, – we are expected to be facilitators, classroom managers, mentors rather than ex-cathedra trainers-, and develop them continuously.
All these tasks seem to be difficult. In fact they are challenging. They raise our zeal for continuous training; for undertaking classroom based research and incorporating the results on our practice in a systematic way; for identifying the needs of each individual learner and respond to them by adopting a wide range of teaching strategies; for reflecting on our practice, evaluating the effectiveness of our teaching strategies and amending them accordingly.
Moreover they evoke the need for interaction. For this reason I invite you to our first meeting (on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007, -primary teachers-, on Thursday, September 6th, 2007, - secondary teachers, junior High School- , on Monday, September 10th, 2007, secondary teachers, Senior High School-) and I will be looking forward to seeing you in order to get to know each other, join our knowledge and experience and set our objectives.
With friendly regards
The school advisor
